Kandahar Crate Company

New and Afghan owned - the Kandahar Crate Company.

The UN estimates that 25 to 40 percent of Afghan fruits and vegetables are destroyed through lack of proper containers during transportation.

This year, Dev Works established Afghanistan’s first plastic crate production facility in rural Kandahar. Able to use and once again recycle materials, the  factory has the capacity to produce 500,000 crates that are better in quality and lower in price than exports. Local farmers, agronomists and merchants designed the crate to be sturdy enough to cope with Afghan conditions and precise enough to meet international shipping standards.

Now fully operational, the factory has been transferred to the Kandahar Industrial Association for all-Afghan ownership and operation. The facility is expected to regularly produce sustainable revenue that will benefit the community for years to come.
