directly engage villagers in the reconstruction of their
communities. Experts in local need, villagers propose the
projects, do the work, and earn much-needed income along
the way. It's in everyone's interest to ensure the work
succeeds.
In practice, communities agree to manage most aspects
of activities. Initial activities are modest, but grow
in scope and worth as communities demonstrate their ability
to develop priorities, organize
and implement efficiently and fairly.
Development Works ensure activities are implemented properly
and safely. Team members see their job as coach and advisor
to villagers. The agency also provides strategic and technical
support, particularly in the development of advanced engineering
and agribusiness activities.
The approach works. Said one village leader (malek) "We
gain benefit two ways: our community rebuilds, and the
money stays with the people."
